Natural Nappies…Bamboo fabric doesn't grow on trees

Let's quickly address a common 'misunderstanding':

There is no such thing as a natural nappy or an "all-natural" nappy.

There is quite a bit of misleading information available with regards to natural vs synthetic products. One simple fact that must be understood is that neither fabric nor any type of cloth nappy grows on trees !

Isn't Bamboo an all-natural fabric ?

Definitely not ! Whilst bamboo fibres are used in the manufacture of bamboo fabrics - the bamboo undergoes several toxic chemical processes when it is transformed from plant fibre to a man made fabric.

This of course does not mean that we are anti-bamboo - far from it - we are very PRO bamboo fabric  but we feel very strongly that moms should be aware of the misleading and exaggerated claims that are sometimes made.

One of the down sides of bamboo terry fabric (specifically the off-white bamboo terry that is commonly used in nappy linings, inserts and flats) is that  like cotton - it feels wet when it absorbs moisture. This is one of the primary reasons why, after testing several nappy designs, we decided against offering bamboo terry lined nappies. Whilst it offers some absorption benefits - we don't like the idea of the lining of a nappy that absorbs wee and keeps it against the skin - leaving baby feeling wet everywhere.

One alternative, albeit slightly more 'synthetic', is the standard microsuede "stay dry" fabric that is more commonly used as nappy lining in pockets  - since this fabric does not absorb moisture it doesn't leave the little one wet and uncomfortable.

The other alternative is a bamboo fleece fabric. Bamboo fleece fabric, as opposed to the more common bamboo terry fabric, is to some degree a "stay dry" fabric. We also decided to simultaneously combine the benefits of a charcoal treated fabric - offering a charcoal bamboo fleece lined nappy. The dark colour of charcoal bamboo fleece hides stains and being darker - dries more quickly in the sun.

BiddyKins Charcoal Bamboo Fleece Pocket:

Charcoal treated bamboo fleeceStructure and size is identical to a standard pocket nappy with the difference being that the inner lining is made of a very soft charcoal treated bamboo fleece. The charcoal particles in the lining give the bamboo lining the dark grey colour. It is claimed that the charcoal nano-particles in the nappy help reduce odours and may have anti-bacterial properties, but what we can confirm is that being darker in colour they not only hide stubborn stains, they also dry more quickly in the sun. The BiddyKins Charcoal Bamboo Nappy is usually sold with two charcoal bamboo inserts.
